Zeph: The Playful Addition to the Herman Miller Chair Family

A black and dark blue Herman Miller Zeph chair next to a white desk

It may look like a simple work chair that would perhaps grace a student residence, but with hidden ergonomic benefits, the Herman Miller Zeph offers more than just good looks.

Launched in 2022, at NeoCon in Chicago, the Zeph aimed to bridge the gap between modern aesthetics and the latest ergonomic research into multipurpose chairs.

Design trio Studio 7.5 wanted to create a chair that students could invest in that had the essence of the more-expensive ergonomic chairs in Herman Miller’s range.

However, they didn’t just want to create a functional chair, they wanted to create one that was also playful and borrowed from the classic shell-shape of other iconic chairs such as those by Charles and Ray Eames.

Much trial and error with several 3D-printed prototypes resulted in the one-piece seat that moves with the user. This Kinetic Monoshell offers a natural recline up to 12.8° that uses the sitter’s pivot points for a natural counterbalance and therefore healthier sitting experience.

Mid-century chair designs were also used as the inspiration for the expansive colour options available. There are seven different shell colours which can be paired with 27 different seat pad options for a mix-and-match look.

While it was perhaps conceived with students in mind, here at Wellworking we’ve just used it on a multi-meeting room project where the client wanted a comfortable but contemporary-looking chair.

We picked the Zeph not only for those reasons but also because of its sustainability story which was another important aspect for our client. The 3D knit seat pads can be easily removed and cleaned or replaced. They’re made from 50% post-consumer recycled content and there is no fabric waste as they are produced to the exact shape. The whole chair is also 99% recyclable at the end of its life.

With a stool version also available, the Zeph has a full 360° swivel and simple height adjustment. You can also select to go without arms or choose the seat shell that has integrated fixed arms.

A versatile, multipurpose chair with a ‘crayon box’ of colours to choose from, the Zeph is the perfect addition for forward-thinking office environments or stylish domestic spaces.
